If people are all crowded together, either the place is crowded or they are close friends (depending on facial expressions and all that). When people are spaced out, either the place is not crowded/a large space or they don't like each other (again it depends on expressions, voices, context, etc.). I think the use of space can mean anything if you show it right, though.
