What friction slows a roller coaster down?

Brakes are used to slow down Roller Coasters. The brakes simply contract together against part of the car and friction brings them to a halt. Another type of roller coaster brake are magnets. The magnets have a force between them that slows the car down.

Two things slow a roller coaster down as it travels over the rails. When the cars are going up hill, gravity slows them. The friction between the wheels and the rails always tends to slow the cars. When the brakes are applied, that friction is increased.
