The Liberty Bell 7 (the capsule for the Mercury 4 mission) was not recovered at the end of the mission like most capsules. It sank in the Atlantic because the craft's hatch was opened too soon (apparently due to a malfunction) and it began filling with water before the recovery helicopter could get a cable attached. It was ultimately retrieved, but not until nearly 38 years after the mission. == ==

Gus Grissom was the second American in space. He flew aboard the Liberty Bell 7 spacecraft on July 21, 1961, as part of the Mercury-Redstone 4 mission.
There were no human Mercury flights before Alan Shepard's, but, there were a few chimpanzee Mercury flights. One such chimpanzee was named Ham. He named his Mercury Capsule "Banana 7."

There were only six named Mercury spacecraft, due to the fact that only six of the Original Seven astronauts flew in the Mercury program (Deke Slayton was grounde due to heart defibrillation). The names were as follows: Alan Shepard -- Freedom 7 Gus Grissom -- Liberty Bell 7 John Glenn -- Friendship 7 Scott Carpenter -- Aurora 7 Wally Schirra -- Sigma 7 Gordon Cooper -- Faith 7
Gemini 3 was nicknamed "Molly Brown", referring to the unsinkable Molly Brown. This was after Grissom's Mercury capsule, Liberty Bell 7, sank upon splashdown in 1961.
Yes, the only other spacecraft to land on Mercury besides Mariner 10 is NASA's MESSENGER (MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry, and Ranging) spacecraft, which successfully orbited Mercury from 2011 to 2015. MESSENGER had a planned impact on Mercury's surface at the end of its mission.

Grissom only. I find that very strange though.
