It is difficult to generalize, because there are many very small spills, and very few large ones.

But certainly, with any spill occurring on a drilling platform as a result of a gas kick, the immediate reaction is to evacuate the platform, and simultaneously actuate the blow out preventer. Most of the time, platforms do not catch on fire. Many blowouts are brought under control. In safety training and procedures, the worse outcome is assumed. Fire fighting equipment, if available, is immediately called in.

Offshore evacuations must be well planned in advance. A platform can be 60 ft above sea level and jumping into the water can often be fatal.
