The Suez Canal (1859-1869) was substantially easier. Suez mainly required the bulk removal of rock and dirt, with comparatively few fresh water sources or vegetation to account for. Although the desert was hot and dry in Egypt, the humid tropical heat of Panama proved equally difficult for workmen. There was also the additional threat of malaria carried by mosquitoes.

The largest difference was that Panama (1904-1914) could not feasibly be built at sea level, as there is also a substantial difference in the ocean height (sea level) between the Pacific and the Caribbean. This, and the height of the terrain, required locks and elevated channels. The tropical rains would often trigger mudslides in the mountainous terrain.
