Kefalonia on Greece has no "rivers" or "lakes" as do many Greek islands. Yes there were rivers but on Kefalonia (again like many Greek islands) they are now dried river beds - unless it rains which it does in winter but even then the dry river beds do not become rivers - or even streams as the amount of water is insufficient. Before anybody points out that Kefalonia has a lake called Mellisani this is not a traditional lake, but an underground cavern that contains water that passes from one side of the island to another (west to east approx).

The lagoon of Melissani is over 150 meters long. Part of its roof has collapsed, admitting sunshine into its interior. This lights up the water and creates wonderful images, both for those who gaze down from on high, standing on the bushy edge of the cliff, where a balcony protected by a railing has been erected, or for those inside the cave. The walls of the cave are covered with stalactites and there are many springs beneath the surface of the water on the northwest side.

Rainwater will flow downhill, following the natural slope of the land. It will collect in rivers, streams, ponds, or lakes, eventually making its way to the ocean. Along the way, it may also be absorbed into the ground, recharging groundwater reserves.
