John Quincy Adams was a member of the Federalist, Democratic-Republican, National Republican, and later Anti-Masonic and Whig parties. When was elected, there were no national political parties and so there were no platforms drawn up and advertised. However, he represented the old-line conservative Eastern establishment that had ruled the country from its beginning.

When he ran for re-election in 1828, he was firmly anti-Jackson and against all that Jackson stood for, but in reality there was little difference in how they stood on specific issues- the big issue was the personality and character of the two men.
