It's an archer garrionsed in a castle. They have a lot more protection there and can fire down onto the advancing enemy. Often, crossbows were used as they could be used in more confined spaces.
The number of archer towers on a castle can vary, but there are typically several strategically placed around the perimeter to provide defense and visibility. It's common to see at least four to six archer towers on a castle, but this can depend on the size and layout of the structure.
An archer would use his/her bow and arrow to fire at attackers attacking the castle. Most of the archers would try to protect the castle. Some would attack castles. They would try to aim for the head and maybe the feet. Some attack/defend on horses.
Defend Your Castle
In the age of true Castle building nothing was standardized. This is further complicated by what bow the defenders would use. Crossbow arrow slits are considerably different in design than those intended for use by a longbow archer.
An Archer. Just for the record, you do not "Play" at archery, it is a serious, highly skilled sport!

Level One : The siege (6 victims, everyone on both sides)- Click on the archer on the castle, so he shoots at the horseman and misses. Click on the clouds overhead (wind changes) to make sure he can't hit anything for now. Click the archer on the ground and quickly the archer on the castle again, who ducks. The arrow sets the raft adrift.- Click on the back wheel of the catapult, which falls off, so that the rock hits the drawbridge and opens it a bit. Reverse the wind with the cloud again. Click the ground archer, who gets in the raft. Click the crocodile as he crosses, he pokes it and it eats him. That's (1)- Click the commander with the sword and he moves up, so you can click the drawbridge and crush him with it. (2) Click the catapult operator, who is flung into the enemy king. (3 and 4) Reverse the cloud once more and click on the archer on the castle who shoots, and his arrow is blown back at him. (5) Click the horseman, who falls on his sword. (6)
I suggest an archer, walls, and knights protect/guard the castle. The archers fire and attack the enemy's, the walls make it hard for the enemy's to get in, and the knights try to hold off the enemy's while the archers also attack the same enemy.

One reason that your village is being attacked by a Level 1 Archer and nothing else is because the attacker found your village attractive due to the amount of gold and/or elixir that you have stored up and if they see you are in a Clan then they will drop an Archer down by your Clan Castle to see if you have troops in there and if you do they may choose to surrender the battle immediately so they don't lose too many of their trophies.
