Why is WHAT called "port"? The WINE? This is uncertain. A SEA PORT? That was where ships came up to the land so that people could carry things on and off the ship. The old word for carrying things was to "port" them. Some of the words derivitaves are "Porter" for someone who carries your bags at an airPORT or train station and "Portable" which means that something can be carried. The PORT side of a ship? It was called that because ships would always put their left side to the pier so that goods could be "ported" off and on the ship on the "port" side.
