The purpose of a foghorn is to warn ships (boats etc.) that they are approaching land, rocks, beaches or even a corral reef. Before the invention of GPS ship captains would rely on astronomical navigation, since most of the seas remained unexplored and/or accurate maps were not widely available. Foghorns are audible whereas, lighthouses are visual and could not always be seen in foggy or other inclement weather.
