Oh, dude, that's like a column or a post or a pillar or whatever. It's like the strong, silent type holding things up in the middle, you know? Just standing there, doing its thing, not asking for any attention.
A drawbridge. There are different types of draw bridges. A bridge that lifts the roadbed straight up along two towers is called a lift bridge. One that tilts one side or the other using a cantilever system is called a cantilever bridge. A bridge that pivots the span from its center allowing vessels to pass on either side is called a swing bridge. All these bridges are considered draw bridges.
Tacoma Narrows Bridge in 1940. This bridge was the 3rd longest suspension bridge when it was completed. Four months after is was opened it collapsed due to wind. The wind created vibrations in the bridge as it blew across the roadway. The bridge normally experienced vertical wave-like movement until on Nov. 7, 1940 when the 42mph wind came and caused the bridge to start twisting in addition to the vertical motion. The entire center span fell into the sound below.
Salisbury Center Bridge was created in 1875.
Center Street Bridge was created in 1918.
