Because God and Mother Nature couldn't decide on anything smaller :) Besides, it travels through a vast watery land, so it spreads. Plus it has many smaller rivers feeding it's flow to the sea.

The Amazon river is huge because of the thousands of smaller rivers and streams that feed it. The smaller rivers and streams are fed by the huge amount of rain that falls in their rain forest.
