There are various references to water being fresh. If it is clean and purified, it is considered fresh and drinkable. Many people do not want to drink from the the tap or shower water even though it appears to be clean and purified. They often want to run their drinking water through a purifier. Drinking from the toilet is strictly tabu.

Examples of fresh water are sources of water that do not have salt content. The two major oceans, the Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans, are not examples of fresh water. They are salt water. The Great Lakes: Lake Huron, Lake Michigan, Lake Erie, etc., are fresh water lakes. They do not have salt in their water content. Their plant and aqua marine life cannot exist with salt. Some ponds or lakes may become polluted, stagnant, and defiled. I do not know of any in North America that are naturally salt water. Rivers and streams are fresh water (Ex.: Mississippi River, Ohio River). Once a river connects and mixes with the ocean, the water is no longer fresh water but salt water.

Gulfs can contain either freshwater or saltwater, but most are primarily saltwater bodies connected to oceans.
