The purpose of the Tower of London was to act as a royal power base in the City of London. It was also to provide a base where armed men, provisions and horses could be kept. It was to overawe and frighten the indigenous population of London. The tower of London provided a retreat for the Royal family in times of civil disorder and to protect London from invasion.
