There are competing claims to the "highest waterfall" since one of the two largest in the state has a "two drop" form.

Kaaterskill Falls in the Catskills near Hunter, NY, has a total drop of 260 feet (79 m), with the higher drop constituting 180 feet (5 m) of the total.

Taughannock Falls near Ulysses, NY, is the highest single-drop falls, at a height of 215 feet (65.5 m).

By comparison, the drop on the American Falls at Niagara is only about 182 feet (55.5 m). A taller falls, totalling over 350 feet, is Inspiration Falls along the Genesee river . But this location only has an actual falls for a few weeks each year, and barely enough water to wet the rocks.
