Michael Ghiglieri ahs documented over 600 fatalities in The Canyon since the 1870s. This includes 43 suicides, 23 homicides, and 126 victims of one plane crash over The Canyon. Almost all others would be listed as "accidental" deaths, which would include falls, drownings, hypothermia, and heat stroke. Note that air crashes are BY FAR the leading cause of death, resulting in 379 fatalities.
We'll make a VERY rough estimate of 400 deaths by accident over the last century, and that gives an average of four deaths a year.
Of course, since visitation has soared over the decades, deaths are more frequent. In 2011, for instance, 21 people died within the boundaries of the National Park.
