Because the continent is covered with an ice sheet, all lakes are sub-glacial. Theories are that these lakes are caused by the warmth of the Earth's core, because the liquid water is so deep beneath the ice sheet.
Not all sub-glacial lakes have been 'discovered' in Antarctica, but to date, about 400 have been identified. The largest found to date is Lake Vostok, which measures about 6,058 mi² in area, with a surface elevation of -1,640'. It is about 155.3 miles long, 31.07 miles wide and about 1,129' deep. It also has its very own island. These statistics are from its Wikipedia page.
Another lake, Lake Willians, measures about 60² Km in area, but is only about two metres deep, according to Nature. It is only 800 M below the surface of the ice sheet.
The Sahara is the second largest desert after Antarctica.
