According to Julius Wolff's authoritative The Shipwrecks of Lake Superior the first shipwreck recorded was that of the Invincible in a storm 1816 near Whitefish Point (Wolff, 11). The Invincible was employed in the fur trade by the Northwest Company, but was by no means the first European-style vessel on the Lakes. However, it seems to me that I recall reading in Grace Lee Nute's book on Lake Superior that an explorer and prospector named La Ronde had built a couple of small sailing vessels in the 1730s and that one of them sank near the Apostle Islands in Wisconsin in either the late 1730s or 40s, which would make that seventy or eighty years older that the Invincible.I hope that this helps.
