What is the significance of the battle of Omaha Beach?

American troops landing at Omaha Beach suffered heavy casualties because the coast was strongly defended. Also they had lost much of their armoured support as the Sherman DD tanks were launched too far out to sea and many sank.

In the end, Allied troops did succeed in penetrating the defenses.

Unlike the other 4 D Day beach landings 'Bloody Omaha' was marked by a high casualty rate amongst the invading forces. Although the Americans got to the shore & eventually created a bridgehead they did so at high cost. 'There are two types of men that are staying on this beach.... First of all, the Battle of Omaha beach does not exist. I think you mean Operation Overlord or D-Day. Anyway, Omaha beach was one of the two US Army's codename beach landings, the other being Utah. Omaha beach was one of the main landing sites for the Allied forces to push Hitler's armies out of France, liberating the country of Fascism, as that's what the German people at the time believed in.
