A desert is any place that receives less than 250 mm of precipitation a year.

Desert types can be arranged in a two by five matrix.

On one axis -

Hot deserts: Very hot in the day, potentially cold at night

Cold deserts: Potentially warm during the day, very cold at night

On the other axis -

Sand desert: essentially a sand sea

Stony desert: cobble and gravel surfaces

Rock desert: bare rock surfaces kept clear of sand or gravel by wind

Plateau desert: rocky plateaux and buttes with deeply eroded wadis

Mountain desert: bare and arid rock peaks

On this matrix the Sahara would be a "hot sand desert"

Points of Interest in The Sahara: The Richat Structureis, a conspicuous "bull's-eye" in the flat and uninteresting of the desert, is found in Mauritania near Ouadane. It has a diameter of almost 30 miles (50 km)
