Kush was bordered to the east by the Red Sea and to the west by the Sahara Desert. These geographic features played significant roles in shaping the culture and trade of the ancient Kingdom of Kush. The Red Sea provided access to maritime trade routes, while the Sahara Desert acted as a natural barrier and influenced the movement of peoples and goods.
The Axum Kingdom was located in present day Ethiopia.

The important landforms of ancient Kush included the Nile River, which provided fertile land for agriculture, as well as the Red Sea and the Eastern Desert. Additionally, the Kingdom of Kush had the advantage of being situated near the confluence of the Blue and White Nile rivers, which contributed to its prosperity and power.
It's the Red Sea.
The decline of the Kingdom of Kush was significantly influenced by the shift in trade routes and the rise of rival powers, particularly Axum. As trade routes began to favor the Red Sea and the burgeoning power of Axum, Kush lost its strategic advantage in commerce, leading to economic decline. Additionally, the depletion of resources and internal strife weakened Kush's ability to compete. Consequently, these factors contributed to its eventual subjugation by Axum around the 4th century CE.
No one knows for sure when the kingdom of Axum began. Axum was located just south of Kush on a high plateau. Today the countries of Ethiopia and Eritrea are located here. Axum had access to the Red Sea.By 50 CE, traders, using the Silk Road, came to Axum for its salt, gold, and gems. Animal products such as ivory, rhinoceros horns, and tortoise shells were also traded in the marketplace. In return they brought with them silk, spices, olive oil, wine, brass, and iron. But Axum wanted more, which led to the people setting their sights on Kush. Taking over Kush gave Axum access not only to the Red Sea but also to the Nile River. This opened even more trading markets in Egypt and the Mediterranean area. Greco-Romantraders often came to Axum. These traders offered many goods, such as steel and cloth.
