A Portuguese explorer by the name of Bartholomeu Diaz was on a voyage to find a passage to the Far East when he discovered South Africa; he sailed around it and landed near Cape Aghulas. This was the first reported "discovery" of South Africa by a European; in actual fact South Africa has been inhabited for thousands of years by the indigenous peoples of the area (Khoi San and other groups).

The straits of Magellan, Named after the explorer that discovered a passage through the bottom end of South America from the South Atlantic to the Pacific, thereby eliminating the need to go round Cape Horn. (Although the "Straits" are so windy, it's a toss-up which is the more dangerous route!)
The first explorer to successfully navigate the Northwest Passage was Roald Amundsen, a Norwegian explorer. He achieved this feat between 1903 and 1906, sailing from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean through a series of Arctic waterways. Amundsen's expedition was significant in demonstrating the viability of this challenging maritime route.
