A MOTTE AND BAILEY CASTLE IS: Motte: A motte is french for a clod of earth. The castle is built on this. Bailey: A bailey is attached to the clod of earth, via some steps and is where the soldiers of the castle sleep, like a small cottage. The castle is made out of wood and has a keep. A keep is like the lookout of a ship, but a lookout for attackers on the horizon. It is usually the safest place in the castle.
I think that the Keep in a Motte and Bailey castle is the building in the centre or the castle. Becaus if you take a Square keep castle the building in the middle (the castle) is square so it gives off the impression that it is the keep.actually a keep is a place were the king and his soldiers would hide when there in a battles (mostly with the Anglo Saxons)
i have no idea what the answer is because i was asking it myself
it had a wooden fence around it but theu used mud ect to build the mound which was the safest place in the castle
The motte was the mound or hill upon which the main keep was typically sited, and was typically surrounded by a ditch (which was usually a side-effect from digging up enough earth to create the motte in the first place). It served as a defensive feature - not only did it give defenders high ground, but placing it on a hill, surrounded by a ditch, slowed the advance of any attackers. As well as this, it also gave a high vantage point from which to sight anybody trying to approach.
A motte-and-bailey is a form of castle. It was made of wood and many were built in Britain and France in the 11th and 12th centuries. Each took 7 to 14 days to build. There were very few Celtic/pre-norman motte and bailey castles. The Normans brought motte and bailey castles in packages like make your own furniture. The main weakness of the motte and bailey castle was that they were usually wooden and therefore burned easily.Parts of the motte and bailey castleKeep- The safest and highest part of the castle. It was uasually attacked by fire arrows. I'm not bothered to answer fully so type' how Motte and Bailey castles were attacked?' and youll find your answer. Soz, I'm just not intelligent enough so thats why I came here in the first place. So good luck or whatever, break a leg or hand. ;)
The normans wouldn't have placed it near another motte and bailey castle in case of constant raids for land, They should have it near a water source such as a river or lake The normans should build on high ground so they can see if someone is going to attack and it is harder for the enemies to attack hope you find this answer helpful
Motte and bailey castles were first built in 1066 after William took the throne. He built them all over England to try and reduce the amount of rebellions that were taking place. All these castles were scaring people into doing what the King said. If they didn't then they would get killed by the many soldiers.
