Why did the army go into Yellowstone?

The history of the ARMY in Yellowstone can be found on the NPS website at nps.gov but I will try to summarize it very simply. The US Army was dispatched to Yellowstone to protect the parks resources after commercial interests, hunters and speculators began flooding the park in the 1880's and exploiting the parks resources. Aka hunting wildlife, damaging thermal features, etc.Administration of Yellowstone was under a superintendent, but as usual they were under funded and had little control over commercial backed interests. In 1886 the Army was called in and soon after they arrived they began construction of Fort Yellowstone at was at the time the only entrance to Yellowstone (Gardiner, MT). For nearly three decades the Army patrolled the park, built roads, protected wildlife and park features and when they were disbanded in 1918 some of the original members joined the new National Park Service civilian administration. As a result the NPS adopted the US Army uniform and the peaked hats that the NPS is now famous for.

What did President Teddy Roosevelt have to do with Yellowstone Nat Park?

First of all, the federal law making Yellowstone a national park was not signed by either President Roosevelt. Both Roosevelts, however, were eager to preserve the best of the USA. Theodore did dedicate an arch over a major entrance to Yellowstone. President Roosevelt made Yellowstone a National Park for ... thinking back to my history lesson -- Whether being political or just his enjoyment, beauty and idea of Yellowstone - that no one should ever build or develope this land - keep it as it is for everyone to enjoy ... and through an Act of Congress designated this particular land the 1st National Park in the United States. Owned and maintained forever by the federal government. There is an Arch (which I have a picture of) that states -just above the arch "FOR THE BENEFIT AND ENJOYMENT OF THE PEOPLE" And I believe he even stated that this was not only the 1st National Park in the US but even the 1st in the World! This led to more designated land in the future throughout the United States and eventually the start of the National Park Service.
