Grant's birth name was "Hiram Ulysses Grant." When Grant was nominated for West Point, the application was made in the name of "Ulysses S. Grant" (nobody knows why this mistake was made). Grant adopted this name while at West Point, and was given the nickname "Sam" (U.S. = "Uncle Sam"). His mother's birth name "Hannah Simpson," and Grant did refer to his mother as "Hannah S. Grant," leading some people to conclude that the "S" stood for "Simpson." However, Grant himself told his friends that the "S" did not stand for anything.

Interestingly, Harry S Truman (or is there a period after the 'S'?) had the exact same situation with his name.
