The Ohio and Erie Canal linked Cleveland with Lake Erie.
The "Erie Canal", opened on October 26, 1825 but not fully completed until 1832.
On October 26, 1825 the Erie Canal was completed and a big celebration was held in New York state.
The original Erie Canal construction was completed in 1825. Since then, three expansion projects have been completed. The first took place in 1836. The second took place in 1862. The third began in 1903 and ended in 1918. This final expansion project was termed the "Barge Canal" and included the connection of the previous Erie Canal, the Champlain River, the Oswego River, the Cayuga Canal and the Seneca Canal.
