The Great Wall of China was made to defend; basically stop the Mongols from entering and invading the dynasty.
I remember reading somewhere that when there were still in the times of emperors in China, an emperor ordered people to build a wall against his enemies (the Mongolians) so that China would have some kind of defense. When that wall was finished, it was a lot shorter than it is today. The wall kept falling down over time, and so the emperor made the people rebuild it over and over. As the emperors changed, they all had ordered their people to make the wall longer and longer and even longer. Over time, the Great Wall of China was formed and hundreds of thousands of people had worked on it. It is now today the longest man-made structure on Earth and one of the Seven Ancient Wonders of the World.
