This goes so far back into the history of man that we don't know. We do know that 5,000 years ago the Egyptians were building walls, the ancient Chinese, and even earlier the Celtic tribes and Vikings encircled their compounds with wooden walls. The historical evidence is there with the post holes still showing even if the wood has rotted away.
