Tower of Babel in the city of Babylon
If you are referring to the tower of Babel in the Biblical aspect; it was built so that people could reach Heaven and make a name for themselves.
the tower of BabelA tower intended to reach to heaven. It is unknown if the tower had a name while it was being built but if it did it was likely to have been the Tower of Shinar, for the name of the plane on which it was built. But after it was named Babel, meaning confusion.
The tower of Babylon
The ancient Babylonians built stepped pyramids which, to the unsophisticated, would have looked as if they were intended to reach to heaven. Socholars say that these pyramids inspired the story of the Tower of Babel.
Why in the world are you asking that question??!! The Eiffel Tower is already built! Why do people want to see a replica of the Eiffel tower for heaven's sake??!
Babel.
According to the Biblical Account, the purpose of the Tower of Babel was to build a tower high enough to reach Heaven. In today's modern age, we understand Heaven as a dimension inaccessible by technological means, but in Ancient Times there was a belief that Heaven was actually in the sky and therefore a tower with enough height could, in theory, reach Heaven.
When the people disobeyed the command of god to scatter abroad over the face of all over the earth and instead built a tower to reach heaven. God confused the language of all the earth and made the people scatter abroad the face of all the earth.
a tower that was built to imprison people
A:Genesis 11:1-9 talks of a Tower of Babel being built right up to heaven by the people in their arrogance, and of God punishing the people by dispersing them and making them all speak in different languages. This story was added to Genesis quite late in Jewish history, during the Babylonian Exile. The exiled Jews, who had never before seen a great cosmopolitan city like Babylon, were in awe of the great ziggurut, a pyramid-like tower, and at the same time surprised to meet people who spoke so many different languages. They associated the tower, which seemed to reach to heaven, and the many strange languages, and so developed the story of the Tower of Babel.
According to the Bible, when the Tower of Babel was constructed, all of the people were of one nation (since there were no different languages yet). However, it was built in Shin'ar, which would be in modern-day Iraq. Therefore, the culture would likely be similar to Sumerian culture.
Tower Bridge was completed in 1894 so the people who built it are obviously all dead.
