Prisoners were not given jobs as punishment. Instead, they earned the right to have a paying job in one of the Industry buildings. Other jobs included stewards for the Officer's dining hall and Warden's mansion, painters, maintenance and culinary workers. The most dreaded of jobs, however, goes to the Incinerator operator. Here, the prisoner loaded the Island's trash to be disposed of inside the incinerator. The first official escape attempt occurred here on April 27,1936 when Joe Bowers (AZ-210) was shot by officer Eugene Chandler when he tried to scale the perimeter fence.
