On April 9, 1682 Rene-Robert de la Salle [November 24, 1643-March 20, 1687] claimed all of the Mississippi River for France. He had moved to North America as an adventurous, hardworking 23 year old. But he became distracted from his initial plans to start a career as a farmer in modern day Canada. What distracted him was the information from Iroquois Indians of a great river that led to a sea.

De la Salle immediately thought that the river emptied into a body of water that would lead to Asia, and a profitable Far East trade. But it wasn't until 1682 that he found his great river. He claimed all of the Mississippi River Basin for France, and called it Louisiana.

The Frenchman continued to explore the area. It was during one of those explorations that he was assassinated by three of his own men. The heinous deed occurred in the subsequent state of Texas.
