The Red River of the North was re-routed in a 1959-1960 flood project after the flood of 1952. 48 houses in Fargo, ND and 17 houses in the Woodlawn area of Moorhead, MN were demolished. Three oxbows north of the Veteran's Hospital were cut off to straighten the river and encourage the water to move out of town faster.

The river rose to 34.65ft in 1952 prompting the changes.
