Many people today believe the Sphinx was built somewhere around 4500 years ago.

The date of 2500 BC was due to consistencies that the Sphinx had with statues of Khafra (which were previously dated to 2500 BC).

A well known Egyptologist named John Anthony West had deducted that it would have been closer to 36,000 BC (38,000 years ago) due to erosion found at the site. He claims that the erosion had formed when the Sahara was a rainforest, before it had become a desert.

John Anthony West has scientific evidence to back up his claims, and has yet to be disproved. Thus it is safe to say that the theory of the Sphinx being built around 2500 BC is incorrect.

It is generally accepted that the Sphinx was built c2575 to c2465 BC - during the Old Kingdom, the age of the Great Pyramid builders.
The Sphinx, which is located in Giza, Egypt, is thought to be from the year 2500 BC. It may have been built for the pharaoh Khafra.
No one really knows. Egyptologist's dont like it but the geologic erosion of the stone seems to have been caused by water.

The most recent time that the area was wet is estimated at 1200BC.
