The American Museum of Natural History was founded in 1869 by a group of prominent New Yorkers, including, among others,

the 26th U.S. President,

Morris K. Jesup,

J. Pierpont Morgan,

A. G. Phelps Dodge,

Charles A. Dana,

and

Joseph H. Choate, The Museum was originally housed in

the

Arsenal buildingin

Central Park. Construction of the first building was begun in 1874 and completed in 1877, and the building has been added to many times since.

The original

building was designed by Calvert Vaux and Jacob Wrey Mould. The most recent significant addition (or substantial renovation of the old Hayden Planetarium) was the Rose Center Planetarium, completed in 2000.
