Great Adventure first opened its gates on July 1, 1974. Created and designed by Warner LeRoy, the park was originally a subsidiary of Hardwicke Companies, Inc. Following its first season, the park required a significiant infusion of additional cash, which was provided by the Pritzker Family of Chicago. By the end of its second season, Hardwicke retained only a 5% interest in the park and management of its operations. At the conclusion of the 1977 season, the park was sold outright to a subsidiary of the Penn Central Transportation Company (GSC/Six Flags) and the name was officially changed to Six Flags Great Adventure.
