Ponce de Leon passed through the Everglades around 1512 when he discovered Florida and went on to map the keys. Ernest F. Coe discovered the Everglades in 1928 and created an association to lobby to have the area a National Park. It is important to understand that there were Native Americans already living there in the 1500s, so the word "discover" probably doesn't apply to the Europeans.
In 1864, the first permanent white settlers, discovered the town of Everglades, now known as Everglades City.
