The Battle of Shiloh began in southwestern Tennessee, near the small church of Shiloh, which is located close to the Tennessee River. It was fought from April 6 to April 7, 1862, and marked a significant early engagement in the American Civil War. The battle started when Confederate forces launched a surprise attack on Union troops camped near the church. The Union forces ultimately held their ground, leading to a hard-fought and bloody confrontation.
