Handsome Lake was a prominent Seneca leader and religious figure who lived primarily in what is now western New York. He was born around 1735 in the area near the Genesee River and spent much of his life among the Seneca Nation. Handsome Lake is best known for his role in the revitalization movement of the Iroquois culture and for establishing the Longhouse Religion in the late 18th century. His teachings and influence extended throughout the Iroquois Confederacy.
