Appalachian comes from Apalchen or Apalachen, which is the name of a Native American tribe that was located near present-day Tallahassee, Florida. The name was altered by the Spanish to Apalachee and used to the describe the tribe and the region. Spanish explorer Pánfilo de Narváez first entered into Apalachee territory on June 15, 1528 and applied the name.
