As a young child growing up in Burnley, I was told it got its name from the old English word for brown. This was because the river had picked up iron sediments from the ground it travelled through, and left and orange brown deposit on the rocks and sediments in the river bed. You can see the rusty looking appearance on stones in and around the river bed.
