No. The Mississippi river starts in Minnesota and flows south to the Gulf Coast in Louisiana. The drainage basin, which includes all of the river's tributaries extends as far west as Montana and as far east as western Pennsylvania and New York. The Mississippi River drainage basin includes portions of 25 U.S. states and 2 Canadian provinces.
It drains into the river delta which enters the Gulf of Mexico in the south part of Louisiana. Basically all of the central US between the Appalachian mountains in the East & the Rockies in the west.
The Mississippi River is east of the Rocky Mountains. The east side of the Continental Divide will drain into the Mississippi River basin.
If you want to get geographical you have to configure in the Red River of the North which flows north unlike the Mississippi and it cuts the drainage basin short up north in the Minnesota/North Dakota area. Here is a link to show you a picture: http://toxics.usgs.gov/hypoxia/images/mississippi_river_watershed.gif The Rocky Mountains are in the west. They act as a barrier. The appalcian mountains in the east probably do as well.
