The Mississippi River.

It divides the nation between the east and the west and it serves as a source of income and provides transportation for several of the states adjacent and surrounding it. It is without a doubt the largest river system in the country, with a drainage basin covering 31 states, and one of the most storied. It is 95 miles long, beginning in Minnesota and spilling into the Gulf of Mexico at New Orleans, LA. It's name derives from an Ojibwe word, misi-ziibi, meaning Great River.
