The British fleet on Lake Erie was defeated by the United States Navy during the War of 1812, specifically under the command of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry. The pivotal Battle of Lake Erie took place on September 10, 1813, where Perry's forces successfully captured or destroyed the entire British fleet, securing American control of the lake. This victory was crucial for the United States as it allowed for the recovery of Detroit and bolstered morale during the war.

The War of 1812 (in it's early years) was focused on the northern border and was aimed to take Canada. The British had a fleet of "Ships of The Line" (battleships usually containing 100 or more cannons and needing up to 450 crew members) A U.S. fleet of "Frigates" and "Sloops: (both fairly small ships compared to the ship of the line) laid siege to the fleet, breaking through the lines with the USS Niagara early in the morning. This victory relinquished several of these ships of the line to the U.S. Navy and secured a route into Canada without Naval interruption. This also split the British supply line.
