Native Americans knew about the thermal features of Yellowstone for millenia before any European group saw it. John Colter was the first such European to record these thermal features but, since mountain men like Colter were notorious liars, few believed his stories. Surveys by the U.S. Geological Service about 1870 confirmed these stories by the mountain men were (incredibly to many) true. In 1872 the U.S. government gave federal protection to the land.
