It originates from the city of Memphis, the capital which in Ancient Egyptian was called Hout ka-Ptah, or Hi-ku-Ptah. This meant "Castle of the ka of Ptah", but it was also sometimes used as a name for their country. When the Greeks conquered Egypt they gave Greek names to cities, regions and even its past Pharaohs.
