John Muir is often called the father of our national park system due to his pivotal role in advocating for the preservation of wilderness in the United States. His efforts in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, particularly in promoting the establishment of national parks like Yosemite, helped shape the conservation movement. Muir co-founded the Sierra Club in 1892, which played a significant role in raising awareness about environmental issues and protecting natural spaces. His writings and activism continue to inspire environmental stewardship today.
This question is somewhat vague. While there are some nationally-recognized animal conservation areas called "zoo" in Africa (The National Zoological Gardens of South Africa is one), the truth is most are not officially called a "zoo" at all. Some may be called a "Sanctuary" "Reserve" or something other than "National Park," but the overwhelming majority of the over 400 areas designated as a National Park ARE explicitly called a "National Park," including Mole National Park, Orango Islands National Park, Nki National Park and River Gambia National Park.
He never created the national park system!
