The sculptures on Mount Rushmore were designed by Gutzon Borglum.

Mount Rushmore is named for a New York City attorney who was in the Black Hills in 1885 checking titles to properties.

One day, while riding past the mountain, Rushmore asked guide William W. Challis what the name of the mountain was. Challis jokingly replied that the mountain did not have a name, but that it did now, that they would call it "Rushmore". The United States Board of Geographic Names officially recognized the name "Mount Rushmore" in June 1930.

Mount Rushmore was originally known to the Lakota Sioux as "Six Grandfathers".
