Better technology - mainly gunpowder for canons and demolition - but even without gunpowder the advance in other technology made taking castles fairly predictable but... some old castles in world war two were able able to hold out under some really brutal attacks for quite some time - i am totally amazed at a castle on Okinawa during world war two that received an incredible barrage of munitions for several days but the Japanese survived and still had to be taken with great effort and lose of life - so although eventually castles cannot survive in modern warfare they can still be very difficult to take (the Japanese castles may look fragile but they were very well designed) I imagine with today's super weapons there would be no problem taking any castle as it could simply be 100% destroyed
