In 1980, Congress designated the islands as national parks due to their unique natural and cultural heritage. A large percentage of the Biology of these islands have been left almost completely unaltered by human development -- amazing when one considers that they are visible from the coast of Southern California. Because of the lack of human destruction on these islands, it is prime living quarters for a wide varieties of life, mostly marine life.
