Sumerians used levees, dams, and canals primarily to manage the unpredictable flooding of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers and to ensure a stable supply of water for irrigation. These water management systems allowed them to control water flow, protect their settlements from floods, and effectively irrigate their fields, which was crucial for agriculture in the arid region. This innovation enabled the growth of surplus crops, supporting population growth and the development of complex societies.
Through the use of dams and canals.
Rivers, creeks, dams, canals and irrigation ditches.
hey guys its the person that asked this question. I need to correct my test, and it asks does sumerians use canals, reservoir and levees and I know canal and levee but what about reservoirs, did sumerians use them? Thanks for any responses...Yes they did. If you google Sumeria and reservoir you will find some articles about that.
Generally for big and major dams, motors are alone not used, all this type dam gates will be controlled manually.Because it is not easy to conrol the large dam gates by motors. But for the dams with single gates, used for irrigation purpose,in canals,we can use the synchronous reversible motors to control such type of dams.
The Sumerians were the first to build an irrigation system. They learned how to use the floodings of the rivers to water their plants. They dug canals in which they could store the water and made gates (dikes) to protect their lands from flooding. When the river went back to its banks, the gates were closed and a lot of water remained in the canals. Without this knowkledge (and hard work) they just wouldn't have been able to live and farm in the very hot weather.
Dams and canals were required to direct scarce water to fields. In any dispute over water use, the good of the community would outweigh the interest of the individuals.

There is evidence that the Sumerians used bows and arrows, but it is not sure whether or not they were created by the Sumerians. The Sumerians also used spears, axes and clubs as weapons.
